Walking into a small house nestled between two large businesses on East State Street with a large sign in front that says "Psychic Readings," one would not expect something called normal. Instead of encountering a purple haze and a crystal ball, a customer of this particular psychic meets a small, kind woman whose main objective is to give a little help to those who need some answers to some of life's difficult questions.

This woman is Jessica Mitchell, and she is waiting to give advice to those who seek it.

Mitchell, a local pyschic clearing up people's cloudy views throug clairvoyance, is helping people by using her special gift. Growing up in Virginia, she started telling fortunes by the age of nine. She says her gift was passed down in her family through the generations. Her grandmother and mother both had it, and she also received it. "It comes through natural intuition, thoughts and directions," Mitchell said. She has been in the psychic business for 20 years.

Mitchell ended up in Athens through a series of events. "I had friends and clients here who told me to come here. My husband got work here, and the house was available. It all fell into place," she said. Mitchell has a large clientele, especially from the Athens area. This includes a large range of different types of customers. All types of people of all ages come from all around Ohio and Parkersburg.

One reason Mitchell tells fortunes is her ability to help people. "I'm here to help all types of people and their problems whatever it is, big or small," she explained.

She has had skeptics come in on different occasions, but she does not mind because even she still gets to help them. "Once they walk in they get a better understanding before they walk out," she said.

Cecilia Fox, a customer of Jessica, was very impressed with the accuracies that were told to her. "Some things she hit right on the nose. I really wasn't expecting it,"  Fox said.

The art of palm readings, also called chiromancy, has been around in many different cultures since ancient times. In India, palm reading predated the written language and was eventually carried northward by small bands of gypsies. It also existed in other ancient cultures such as China and Greece. Pythagoras, a famous mathematician and mystic, even wrote a book on palmistry.

Mitchell can do more than just single palm readings. She can fortune tell using one to two palms and tarot cards--a much more in-depth and accurate form of fortune telling-- as well as perform lifetime readings.
