Spring into Moms’ Weekend at OU

As Mother’s Day is quickly approaching, there is no better present to give Mom than to take her to the various events happening during Moms’ Weekend at Ohio University.

On Friday April 30, the OU softball team will take on Toledo in a double-header game at the Athletic Complex. The first game starts at 1 p.m., and the second game begins at 3 p.m. Tickets start at $5.

Later in the day, students and their mothers can enjoy authentic Africana dance by the Ohio University African Ensemble with “AZA!” A concert of traditional and contemporary African music and dance will be shown at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $9 for non-OU students and free with OU student ID.

Finally on Friday, visiting mothers can come and relax on West Green with Bahama Bring Your Mama, which will feature games, free food and a chance to win prizes. The festivities start at 9 p.m. at Boyd Dining Hall.

Saturday brings a selection of events for students and their mothers to attend. Starting at 10 a.m., guests can attend the 10th Annual Moms Walk for A Cure and luncheon at Ping Center. Students can pay the $15 preregistration fee at Baker Center 4th floor and College Gate on April 26, 27, 29, and 30. Students must pay an additional $8 to attend the luncheon after the walk. The registration includes a T-shirt and raffle ticket. The proceeds of the event go to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and Stefani Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.

Also at Ping, at 11 a.m., is the Mom’s Market. Mothers can enjoy shopping from local stores around the Athens area. The Black Student Cultural Programming Board and the Student Activities Commission are putting on a Mom Expo at noon at Baker Center. They will provide delicious food, fun crafting, relaxing massages, and good music.

If your mother is into sports, watch the Bobcats’ softball team play another game, this time against Bowling Green, at 2 p.m.

If music is what your mother enjoys, take her to see the Singing Men of Ohio & Women’s Chorale in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium, also at 2 p.m.

Does your mom have a sweet tooth? Come to the Baker Center 2nd floor at 2 p.m. to be part of the Moms’ Weekend cake decorating event, where she can have her cake and eat it too. Participants can make and design their own cakes. Teams can even compete for the chance to win prizes. Tickets for this event go on sale April 26 at Baker and College Gate and on May 1 at Ping, costing $10 per team of mother and son or daughter.

After a busy day of events, students and their mothers can sit down and enjoy a relaxing tea with President McDavis and the first lady, Mrs. Deborah McDavis, at the president’s residence at 29 Park Place. The event starts at 8 p.m.

Relaxing events await on Sunday. At noon, PAGE will hold the Rock the Runway fashion show at Baker Theater. Come out and see how fashion, as well as beauty, has no definition.

If students and their mothers are into helping out Athens, they can join in Beautification Day at 11 a.m. at West Portico.

For all of the sports mothers out there, the softball team is having another game against Bowling Green at 1 p.m.

Also throughout the weekend, the Kennedy Museum  will have several art exhibits, such as HerART, wearable art done by women to promote women’s heart health.

With all of these events going on during Mom’s Weekend, students just might need another weekend to recover.
