Wednesday's Student Senate meeting short

With elections looming, Ohio University’s Student Senate met briefly on Wednesday, May 16.

In my opinion, this meeting was held only as a formality. With no student speaking out, no new business, no old business, no presentations and hardly any real senators present, I think the meeting was called to order just because they have to have a meeting every week.

The senate jumped right into commissioner reports, and even those lasted less than 10 minutes or so. Many of the senators (or their proxies) had nothing to report, saying it was a slow week.

Interesting to hear was Black Affairs Commissioner Michael Adeyanju talk about the rally that was held in support of President McDavis and how pleased he was that people showed up and marched through Baker. With so much negativity surrounding the McDavis name lately, it was sort of nice to see that not everyone has given up on the administration.

The proxy for State and Federal Affairs Commissioner Zach Noble brought a round of laughter from the senate when he reported that there was not much new news and that the state and federal governments were running just fine.

I had been looking forward to seeing the tension between those running for office the night before the elections, but all the senators involved in campaigning remained composed and did not let the stress get to them. Many wishes of good luck were given to those running, and I am sure they appreciated the support.

Next week’s meeting of the OU Student Senate will take place Wednesday, May 23 at 7:15 p.m. in the Walter Hall Governance Room.
