Looking for an activity for you and Mom before hitting the bars this weekend? The Fashion Associates will hold their Mom’s Weekend Spring Fashion Show and raffle from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. May 3 in the Baker University Center Ballroom.
The Fashion Associates, a club composed mostly of students who are retail majors, promotes and aids students who want to pursue a career in the fashion industry. The group focuses on professional development, fundraisers and philanthropy, including its biggest event: the Mom's Weekend Fashion Show.
For months, club members have worked to put together all aspects of the fashion show. "Planning takes about one week of winter quarter and all of spring quarter," said Caitlin Holland, a sophomore and fashion show coordinator. Members recruit models from around campus by asking students and posting fliers, and they get clothes to model from stores around Athens. “This year we’re going to have clothes from Noir, The Other Place, Elder Beerman and Maurices,” Holland said.
The Fashion Associates have 500 seats to fill at this year’s show. “Last year we only had half of the ballroom and only had 200 chairs. The seats completely filled up, and we had to turn people away," Holland said. "This year we’ll have both the whole ballroom, around 500 chairs, so we’ll be able to fit more people.”
After the show the Fashion Associates will have a raffle with prizes, including accessories and gift certificates from uptown stores. Last year the club raised around $1,500 from the raffle and donated the money to Passion Works, an art studio that provides art opportunities for people with disabilities.
This year the money raised will go toward a scholarship for one of the Fashion Associates’ club members. “All the money will go toward a scholarship for one of our club members, picked by our president, for things like their schooling or housing if they leave to do an internship,” Holland said.
The fashion show is a bonding event for all who are involved. “Planning the fashion show is a great OU club bonding experience, and it’s a great free event for students and their moms to attend this Mom’s Weekend,” Holland said.
