Moms invade OU

The biggest party weekend in Athens has finally arrived, and it will not be wild and crazy college students drinking most of the beer. It will be the moms.

Mom’s Weekend at Ohio University is historically one of the biggest events on campus, bringing in more people than any other event besides commencement, said Kelly Clonch, bookkeeper at the Ohio University Inn on Richland Ave. The OU Inn allows reservations up to six months in advance, and Clonch said the hotel has been booked for Mom’s Weekend about that long.

Almost every other area hotel is completely full for this weekend, although the Hampton Inn on East State Street had a few rooms open due to cancellations as of Wednesday. Typically, the Hampton Inn sells out for Mom’s Weekend within a week, according to the hotel manager.

The brand-new Holiday Inn on East Park Drive opened in August and has been booked since then, said Julie Rowan, a hotel worker. They are not expecting any problems with rowdy mothers and think it will be business as usual.

The Athens County Visitors Bureau keeps track of availability of area hotels on its Web site and is already advertising that parents book now for family weekends next school year.

While many moms choose to hit up the bars on Court Street or parties elsewhere in town, the university offers a number of different activities and events sponsored by groups on campus.

A full list of activities for Mom’s Weekend is listed on the campus Web site.
