Sex & Health

Making relationships work in college

This is college and everyone gets stressed, but one thing to stress less about is relationship problems. Whether you’re across campus or across the country from each other, there are ways to maintain a healthy, happy relationship for both people involved.

“The Biggest Loser” now at OU

If one heard the phrase, “The Biggest Loser,” he or she would probably think of the television show on NBC. With a clever name, the producers took a phrase thought of as an insult and made it what the contestants strive to be. “Biggest Loser” now refers to the one whom can lose the most weight, rather than an insult towards someone.

What women (and men) want

It’s ingrained in all people to be curious about what others, especially the opposite sex, think of them. One may wonder if others like he or she as a person, find them attractive, or just can’t stand them.

Healthy alternatives available at campus dining halls

Body image is a worry for anybody. Nerves ensue if one’s belly is protruding a bit more than it used to, or if one’s arms and legs look less toned. Exercising is always a valid option, but for those who prefer to keep the weight off with simple choices that don’t require so much work, there are options.

Becoming ‘locavore’

Filled with students and adults alike, 129 Bentley Hall was buzzing with talk about recent Earth Month activities even before Jim Merkel stepped into the room on the night of Tuesday, April 6. It was easy to sense the excitement as the founder of the Global Living Project began to lecture on the importance of being “locavore.”

Embarrassment revealed: Students implicating the walk of shame

A common scenario on a Friday or Saturday night for college students: Two people run into each other while out on the town. The two may be familiar faces or complete strangers depending upon the amount of alcohol each has consumed. While their interaction begins with flirting and light petting, this touching soon leads to intense groping.

The economics of sex

On Tuesday, the Economics Club welcomed its first guest lecturer in Bentley Hall. Dr. Richard Vedder has worked for Ohio University since 1965. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He was asked by the club to give a lecture on economics that would be relatable to students. With that in mind, Dr. Vedder spoke with great enthusiasm on the economics of sex.

Thank you for smoking…away from buildings

After making the trek up Morton Hill, huffing and puffing all the while, the last thing an out-of-breath non-smoker wants to do is take in a lungful of cigarette smoke. Unfortunately, with the lax smoking regulations and the wide number of smokers standing directly in front of all buildings, a cloud of smoke is hard to avoid.

Feeling the winter blues

The first snow of the year is always a cause for excitement, but as the days pass and the snow turns slushy and brown, excitement begins to fade. Wading deeper and deeper into the winter season, many tend to miss the warm, sunny days of spring and summer and may become slightly or severely depressed.

The Date Doctor makes a house call

Through the chaos of college classes, parties and “Jersey Shore” marathons, it can often be difficult to find and keep a healthy relationship. Luckily, Ohio University received a house call from David Coleman, the Date Doctor.

Better safe than sorry

Not three miles away from Ohio University, Kevin Martin and his son, Ben Martin, were sparring with rubber knives. Kevin Martin, a local bando black belt and landscaping business owner, has been teaching self-defense to the local populace for years in the form of bando, a Burmese martial art.

Wholesome holiday activities

Winter break can be a devastating time for the hard-working college student. The lack of homework and papers to write often drives students to madness. Luckily, there are some ways to combat this intellectual cabin fever. Doing a variety of wholesome activities over winter break can keep your mind, body and soul in check.

Study break

As Ohio University students prepare for a week of reviews, note cards and frantic dashes to the nearest coffee shops, one preparation is often forgotten: dealing with the stress. Many factors can add to the stress involved in surviving finals week, but, if handled properly, stress can be alleviated and lead to nothing but success.

Shedding the 'Freshman Fifteen'

Since college is a place where people can finally have their independence and make their own decisions, there is no one to tell them to do their homework, how they should dress and where they can and cannot go. Yet, the one regulation everyone may regret giving up is what they consume.

Former sex slave tells her story to stop the trade

The FBI has named Toledo, Ohio, one of the leading areas for children as young as 9 to be entered into sex exploitation. Globally, 27 million people are involved in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, which has lasted over four centuries. Belts Breaking Bondage, a student organization that makes stylish belts out of donated fabric and donates 80 percent of the proceeds to an organization dedicated to stopping the sex trade, brought in Theresa Flores on Tuesday, May 19 to discuss her experience with the sex trade.
