‘Oscar’ race comes to an end on March 7

There are the People’s Choice Awards, Golden Globe Awards and the dreaded Razzies, but on March 7, directors, actors and audiences alike will be on the edge of their seats in anticipation of who or what goes home with a shiny, golden man – the Oscar.

Scorsese gets sinister with ‘Shutter Island’

Which is worse: to live as a monster, or die as a good man? In Martin Scorsese’s newest film, “Shutter Island,” which is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane, one man’s search for answers forces him to question everything and everyone he’s ever known, including himself.

‘StarStruck’ sure to strike big with tweens

“StarStruck,” which premiered on the Disney Channel Feb. 14, tells the classic tale of an uncool girl who falls for the most popular boy. It is a romance set in the world of pop stars, an increasingly common backdrop for Disney productions, and is laced with enough memorable music to have audiences watching it repeatedly just to learn the lyrics.

The CW prepares questionable new season

The CW announced five pilot pickups Tuesday, Feb. 2: “Betwixt,” “HMS,” “Hellcats,” “Nikita” and “The Wyoming Project.” While the network’s attempt to be known as something other than the former WB is overdue, a second book-based series, a remake and uninspired dramas may not be the wisest moves.

Hot Chip on 2010’s short list of albums

British electropop band Hot Chip released its fourth album this month, exploring a more toned-down mood. One Life Stand piles on the band’s typical synthesizer-drenched ambience and mellow vocals but integrates more disco and harmonies than ever before.

Flimsy adaptation makes ‘Lightning Thief’ a god-awful mess

Cringe-worthy dialogue and a blatant disregard for many key points in the novel on which it is based keep “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” from even being a contender to take over the current reign of teenaged wizards and vampires.

‘The Renegade Hunter’ disappointing addition to series

If one has never heard of the Argeneau vampires before, “The Renegade Hunter” is not the book to start with. Bestselling author Lynsay Sands continues her 12-part series on the vampire family with this disappointing addition to the collection.

‘Lost’ returns with answers and more questions

After an eight-month wait, ABC’s sci-fi juggernaut “Lost” returned with a bang–literally, thanks to an exploding hydrogen bomb–and promised a final season heavy in alternate reality theories, spiritual mythology and new insights into the characters via “flash-sideways.”

‘Perfect Chemistry’ bonds new and old

As Simone Elkeles’s “Perfect Chemistry” begins, you may feel the need to strangle the main characters. Brittany is the cheerleader with mouthwatering looks and bitchy friends. Alex is the bad boy with gang paraphernalia and an accent. Of course, they’re both secretly miserable. However, despite their initial unoriginality, these characters set the scene for a novel that transcends stereotypical images.

Shepard’s back in ‘Mass Effect 2′

An impressive voice cast, visceral combat, stunning visuals and the most interesting continuation of decisions made between two games. All of this describes BioWare’s latest game, “Mass Effect 2.”

‘Chuck’: Likability plus amped up action equals success?

While not the funniest or most enthralling show, “Chuck” has attempted to find its own little niche and satisfy the audience who dwells there. The comedy has struggled with ratings since the beginning, mostly because the spy chronicle does not seem to really have “it” – the “it” that spy-drama “Alias” and spy-comedy “Get Smart” both possessed.

‘Mother’ dances around pivotal information for the hundredth time

For five seasons, CBS’s screwball comedy “How I Met Your Mother” has offered laughs, heart, awesome guest stars, new holidays and legen … wait for it … dary pick-up lines. One thing “Mother” has not coughed up? The identity of the titular matriarch.

Over break, my cousin and I saw James Cameron’s newest film, “Avatar.” . Released in theaters Dec. 18, “Avatar”
