With the help of a career-high 14 kills from senior outside hitter Whitney Maiden and 44 assists from sophomore setter Michelle Jantsch, the Ohio women’s volleyball team battled a tough match against Eastern Michigan University and came out winning (18-25, 25-21,18-25, 25-12, 15-12) their third fifth-set match of the season Saturday in the Convocation Center.

 

All sports teams are entitled to at least one poor performance, but seeing it come from the No. 19 Bobcats was quite a shock.

Sue Jacobi, Melissa Szkutnik, Michelle Jantsch and Meryle Bender make up one of the best recruiting classes in Ohio athletics history, but these four freshmen volleyball players are something more the just great recruits; they are good people.

The Ohio Volleyball team has been on the road all fall quarter, with the Bobcats most recently traveling to Colorado for the Pioneer Classic. Speakeasy Sports Katherine Bercik uses her Volleyball Blog to catch everyone up on the Bobcat season heading into the MAC season.

Since Geoff Carlston has been at the reigns of the Ohio volleyball team, they have been the best team on campus winning four consecutive Mid-American Conference Championships. This year, the Bobcats are going for number five and after a strong performance at the Hampton Inn Volleyball Classic earlier this week, the team seems up to the challenge.

It’s said that coaches wear many hats, and after Saturday’s 3-0 win, Ohio volleyball coach Geoff Carlston had to shout over the noise in the Rohr Room to quiet the group of fans ready to ask questions of his team.
